The Hungarian University of Fine Arts commemorates the 150th anniversary of its foundation with a wide-ranging series of jubilee programs spanning the entire academic year. The next large, representative exhibition of the MKE150 / HUFA150 events celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Intermedia Department.

És mégis mozi a föld!

“Because this world…is a movie palace…life is not algebra, but a sound film…
- True! Epurci move… - said the mechanic.
- And, yet, it’s movies! – nodded Maxbell.”

P. Howard (Jenő Rejtő): Dirty Fred Intervenes. Albatrosz books; Magvető, Budapest, 1966. (2) p. 254.

The Intermedia Department of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts was established between 1990 and 1993, in parallel with the historical - political transformations that took place in the region, and largely as a result of the demands of the students. Two outstanding professors of the department, János Sugár, who is the current head of the department and Miklós Peternák, the curator of the “EPPUR SI MOVIE! IMXXX” exhibition started to create the program of the Intermedia Department, working closely with the students. The initial period of the department was most like an experimental workshop; the teachers, who were prominent Hungarian representatives of contemporary culture, trained the students following a flexible syllabus. In the complex educational program, great care was taken to organise special art events as well as to invite international lectureres and artists. In addition to social changes, the history of the intermedia specialisation is also in parallel with the spread of the Internet and interactive techniques, the total and global transformation of communication and imaging devices, the technical media as a whole. From the very beginning, the Intermedia Department has considered its task to expand art education to art forms and art techniques that first appeared in 20th-century fine art, such as photokinetic and electronic arts, multimedia, installation and action arts, as well as new communication techniques.

The aim of the " EPPUR SI MOVIE! – IMXXX” jubilee exhibition is not to fully cover the history of the intermedia department; instead, both in the exhibition hall and on the virtual platforms, it focuses on students' works made for this exhibition, giving shapshots of some events, personalities and works in the history of the Intermedia Department. The distinctive feature of the intermedia faculty is that the use of any technique, method or medium suitable for artistic expression is permitted; the refreshing variety and electrifying diversity thus created also characterises the "And Yet It Is Movies! IMXXX – Intermedia Retrospective” exhibition.

We have chosen the medium of the film, the moving image as the central element of the exhibition, as the most radical transformation of the last three decades can be attributed to this. Although we know from Plato that time is a moving image of eternity, the title and motto of the Intermedia retrospective exhibition comes from the much better known Hungarian novelist, Jenő Rejtő (P. Howard): "And yet it’s movies." These words, quite simply, express it all.
