Doctoral Programme

The Doctoral School of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts offers a 2+2 year DLA programme during which every 6 months students have to present a summary of their artistic and research project.
As our institute is accredited in the field of Fine Arts, the research plan should be planned with a focus on Fine Arts.
Please consider that the final doctoral project will have to be a visual artwork and a dissertation with a focus on this field.

Once students complete the first 3 years, they can apply for the final doctoral dissertation and art project to receive their DLA degree. This final phase of studies has to be completed within 2 years.
Applicants must choose a tutor/ supervisor for their doctoral research with whom they can define their research plan. Each January tutors announce their current research topics that have previously been accepted by the Doctoral Senate.
Candidates are requested to contact the supervisor at HUFA (of the chosen topic) by e-mail. If the supervisor’s decision is positive, they need to sign a Letter of Approval and the applicant must add the document to the application.

Deadline for uploading the Letter of Approval:

Besides the supervisor’s Letter of Approval, Stipendium Hungaricum applicants must add an artistic portfolio (minimum of 5 works) to their application. The portfolio is a documentation of the applicant's artistic activity. Students nominated by the sending partner country must participate in an interview, which is usually held in April. The coordinator will inform candidates of the exact date by e-mail.
The application consists of presenting a portfolio of the applicant’s artistic activity and proficiency and an elaborated research plan for the first 2 years that is equally considered in the final decision.
Along with your portfolio and detailed research plan, an official proof of your language skills should be also submitted in the application procedure.

Criteria for admission assessment

The admission procedure is designed to select the most suitable candidates from among the applicants, as the Doctoral School can only accept a limited number of doctoral candidates. The decision will be based on the applications submitted, suitability, creative career, quality of the work plan, and additional information will be provided to the Committee during the interview, which will take place in person or online.
According to the HUFA regulations on doctoral training, admission to the doctoral school is based on the submission of an individual work plan for one of the announced doctoral topics, including a description of the doctoral candidate's planned artistic creation and research work, in a schedule corresponding to the chosen topic, for the first two years of the training period. Therefore, the Admissions Committee will evaluate both the feasibility of the individual work plan and the works presented during the admission interview. Since the DLA degree is primarily required for those who wish to pursue a career in teaching, the Admissions Committee may consider teaching qualifications in its decision.
