In Conversation with Kader Attia at the Ludwig Museum – Repair as a Phenomenon
On November 20, the Ludwig Museum will host a special afternoon event featuring internationally acclaimed Algerian-French contemporary artist Kader Attia. Entitled Repair as a Phenomenon, the event will explore the artistic, social, and political dimensions of repair and restoration through lectures, film screenings, and an interactive discussion with the audience.
Kader Attia’s artistic practice focuses on cultural identity, the legacy of colonialism, collective memory, and the processing of historical trauma. A central concept in his work is “repair”, through which he explores the relationship between individual and collective wounds and broader social and cultural structures.
The internationally renowned artist curated the 12th Berlin Biennale in 2022 and has received several prestigious awards, including the Prix Marcel Duchamp (2016) and the Premio Joan Miró (2017). His works are held in major international collections, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, and Tate Modern in London. One of his works is also part of the Ludwig Museum’s collection in Budapest.
During the event, art historian and curator Timea Junghaus will respond to Attia’s lecture, placing the issues raised by the artist within a Hungarian and regional context. The programme will also feature screenings of Attia’s video works Reflecting Memory (2016) and The Forgotten Suitcase (2024). An interactive Q&A session will provide the audience with an opportunity to engage directly with the artist.
The event has been conceived by art historians and curators Borbála Kálmán and Viktória Popovics.
